Comments by Matt Fuerst Rating: 8	For those of you outside the Detroit area, Chris Chelios is a hockey player for the Detroit Red Wings. Before playing for the Wings, Chelios was a member of the Chicago Blackhawks for many years. While playing in Chicago, Cheli (nickname) opened a "Chili Bar" in Chicago featuring his special chili. A few years as a Winged Wheeler have led Cheli to open two "Chili Bars" in Michigan... So having a celebrity in town with his own "Chili Bar" makes it a very obvious destination for the Chili Trek. Alas, I played the role of a cheating spouse on Mark, and made a trip down to the place without him. Yes, I felt guilty about it, but I managed to drown my guilt with some New Castle Brown Ale and Bell's Oberon until all I felt was warm happiness from chili in my stomach. The Detroit Cheli's Chili Bar is pretty fancy inside. From the front door of the restaurant you could literally throw a baseball into Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers. So it's a great location in Downtown Detroit that has really been built up in the past 10 years. While undoubtedly a hip location, it might be a bit troublesome parking-wise. There's enough parking in the area when there's a weekday Tigers game, but heading into the area during a weekend baseball game or a Lions game might mean real bad news. Cheli and company obviously spent some good dough refurbishing the inside of the joint, it's all done nicely in brick and very large wooden beams. Classy. Large plasmas adorn every wall and its tough to find an angle where you can't see a TV. There's less memorabilia on the walls than I expected, but it's very classically done inside. My only complaint atmosphere-wise is that the tall ceilings, along with the brick and glass makeup make the place exceedingly loud. Sitting at a table I literally could not hear the person direct across from me talking, even in a loud voice. Yelling is mandatory, thus adding to the mass auditory confusion. Chili time - well, I have to say, Cheli delivers on the chili. He offers three main types, his original beef chili along with chicken and veggie chili. Being a manly man I got the original chili in a breadbowl, topped with sour cream, cheese and onions. This comes out pretty pricey, probably $7 worth of chili, but I will say I didn't feel ripped off at all. At most restaurants I can't allow myself to just order a bowl of chili for dinner, but I had a genuinely difficult time finishing all the chili and bread. The bread bowl was delicious. In teasing Mark this morning, I described it as crusty and lusty. Crispy and flakey on the outside, but soft and supple on the inside. Best breadbowl I've ever had. The chili had some flavor, there's obviously the secret spices in there, but it's kept pretty simple. You aren't overwhelmed with clashing flavors. As per usual, not much spice is present in the stock chili, but each table is stocked with a basket of 8 or so hot sauces to add some kick to the chili. The chili is thicker than your average chili but not tough to stir. Not a lot of vegetables are present, but enough to pass the Matt-test. A great bowl of chili. Genuinely a chili I would feel comfortable ordering for dinner alone. I should note Mr. Chelios arrived at his restaurant while we were there and was very nice to everyone. So you never know, its worth a trip down to see some Detroit celebrities.
